The world's most famous ultramarathon was established in 1921 as a live memorial to the fallen soldiers from South Africa in World War I. Every South Africa distance runner aspires to capture the coveted finisher's medal by completing the course under the strict limit of 12 hours.  Marathon Tours & Travel is proud to be one of the officially recommended travel agencies working directly with the organizing committee.

The approximately 89K runs from Pietermaritzburg to Durban in the even numbered years and from Durban to Pietermaritzburg in the odd numbered years.  The 2019 race is an “UP RUN” starting at the City Hall in Durban and finishing at the Scottsville Racecourse in Pietermaritzburg. The race distance is approximately 87km. The distance is subject to change and will be confirmed in the final race instructions.

South Africa is one of the world's great travel destinations.  Its multi-cultural heritage and outstanding natural attractions offer excellent post-race options to safari in world-class Shamwari Private Game Reserve or explore the history and vineyards of Cape Town.
