Gorilla Trekking

GORILLA TREKKING IN RWANDA - 2012 Pricing

The ultimate game viewing high is to trek on foot to see the Mountain Gorilla in its natural habitat. One of our staff visited Sabinyo Silverback Lodge in Rwanda in July 2010 and had the thrill of her life when a silverback gorilla approached her to within a few feet and lied down for a nap. This photo was taken by her at a distance of 5 feet.

We offer a pre-Lewa trip to the Virgunga Lodge with Volcanoes and a post-Masai Mara trip to the Silverback Lodge, owned by the same family that owns Governor's Camp.  After arrival on your flight to Kigali, the staff will greet you and transport you on a three- to four- hour ride to their resort. The highly-coveted gorilla watching permits are secured by the lodge well in advance of your arrival. Thus, early planning is a must to be sure you will have them during your stay.

Jacqui Kaufman, one of our Africa experts, would be pleased to provide you with her personal account of this adventure.

June 21st - June 24th  Itinerary and Package Pricing Volcanoes Virunga Lodge: SOLD OUT

Please contact us for availability at another lodge

Day 1: Arrive at the airport and transfer to Kigali where you will have a short safari briefing. After lunch, depart for the Parc National des Volcans as you journey north through the beautiful terraced hillsides of Rwanda until you reach the base of the Virunga volcanoes.

Day 2: Go gorilla tracking in Parc National des Volcans (subject to availability at time of booking). Tracking gorillas through the light mountain forest on the slopes of the Virungas is a magical experience. If you are lucky, you can get close to the gorillas, spend an hour with them, and be back at the base for a late lunch! Some gorilla families however are more elusive and tracking can take a full day, especially when it is wet and muddy.

Day 3: Go gorilla tracking (subject to availability at time of booking) or opt to visit the golden monkeys, trek to the legendary, late Diane Fossey's grave, climb the Visoke or Muhavura Volcanoes, or drive to Gisenyi, visit Ros Carr's orphanage and Lake Kivu. We recommend two days of gorilla tracking for this itinerary and have included both passes in the total package pricing.

Day 4: Leave for Kigali. Time permitting, go for a tour of the city including a visit to the market, a pottery project, and the genocide memorial. Transfer to the airport.

Double: $3,869 per person

Single: $4,220

A deposit of $500 per person plus full payment for each gorilla permit is due at the time of booking.
